Quality costs in historic hospitality during the Covid-19 pandemic. Case studies of Jelenia Góra and Banska Bystrzyca

Abstrakt

This publication aims to present the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic on the quality of management of historic hotel facilities in Poland and Slovakia. A comparative analysis of historical hotels in Jelenia Góra and Banska Bystrzyca was made for publication purposes. The choice made was due to many similarities, including, in particular, the comparable size of both cities, as well as their potential for historical sites. In the theoretical part, the authors showed the specificity of the historical hotel industry in the world and discussed the concept of quality management. To achieve the assumed goals of the work, the authors conducted research in the form of a personal interview with a deliberately selected group of owners and managers of hotel facilities in Jelenia Góra and Banska Bystrzyca. The research sample consisted of about 20 hotels, 10 from each town. The empirical part of the publication presents the results of the conducted research. The research questions concerned the impact of the pandemic on the quality of hotel services and the importance of quality costs in the operation of hotels. The publication was written using compact materials, scientific publications, as well as statistical data and data obtained through a personal interview.

Bohuslava Gregorova - Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica

Bohuslava Gregorová, PhD., Researcher, assistant professor, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Geography and Geology. Bohuslava Gregorová has been dealing with the geography of tourism since 2006. She finished her Ph.D. at the Department of Geography and Applied Geoinformatics of Prešov University in Prešov. At present, she works at the Department of Geography and Geology of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica as an assistant professor of human geography. Since 2017 she has been working as head of the department. She specialised in the teaching of Economic Geography, Geography of Tourism, Religious Geography, Behavioral Geography, and Geography of Slovakia. Her research interest is focused on spatial models of tourism, theory and methodology of tourism, urban tourism, use and application of GIS in tourism, history of tourism, pilgrimage tourism, and regional development in tourism. In 2005, she was awarded the diploma of an accredited travel guide. She has been working as an expert evaluator for SRIN I – T administered by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Investments and Information Technology since 2017, and since 2018 as an expert – methodologist in the Slovak Environmental Agency, which is a departmental organization of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic.

Wojciech Sadkowski - Jagiellonian University

Wojciech Sadkowski, Ph.D., Jagiellonian University, Institute of Economics, Finance and Management, Department of Finance and International Economics. He works as a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Finance and International Economics at Jagiellonian University. His interests, research, and publications focus on quality costing, managerial accounting, and quality management issues.

Krzysztof Sala - Pedagogical University of Krakow

Krzysztof Sala, Ph.D, Research Assistant, the Pedagogical University of Krakow, Institute of Law, Economy, and Administration. Department of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation. A graduate of International Economic Relations (specialisation European Studies) at the Krakow University of Economics (master’s degree) completed diploma, post-​graduate studies in the field of quality management and environmental protection School of Management and Banking in Krakow and the College of Management and Finance School of Economics in Warsaw, leading to a doctoral degree in economic sciences. Many years of experience in business practice in various union positions, including managerial positions. Experience in scientific and teaching work gained public and private. Participation as a coach in training funded by the EU under the Human Capital, the scope for wider tourism and management. The main areas of interest include economic policy and tourism Polish and European Union, small and medium-​sized businesses entrepreneurship, and strategic management.
