Development of warehousing infrastructure in the close vicinity of seaports in Poland against the background of the potential of port cities and port‑city relations

The subject of the study was the distribution of warehousing infrastructure, taking into account the socio-economic potential of the studied ports and port cities, and the port–city relationships. The following were considered: the population of port cities, the number of businesses in the manufacturing industry, and the turnover and cargo structure in ports and storage facilities, i.e. storage centres, container depots and fuel depots. The analysis covered ten ports in Poland: Gdańsk, Gdynia, Szczecin, Świnoujście, Police, Kołobrzeg, Elbląg, Darłowo, Ustka and Stepnica. There was a clear advantage for the port and the city of Gdańsk in each aspect analysed. In a broader spatial perspective, considering the Tricity of Gdańsk–Gdynia–Sopot conurbation, its potential is even more significant, with Gdynia, the second largest port in Poland, also benefiting. The larg- est warehousing centre in northern Poland was located within the Gdańsk area, near the container terminal. Business entities operating there have taken advantage from the neighbourhood of the port.
